Conclusion: I tried to find the offical rated power consumption for the devices used, but i was unable to find any reliable numbers, i found a site that listed the load consumption for the 3850 at 195watts this is obviously not correct as the most i pulled from the system was 230, which would leave only ~35 watts for the rest of the system. Oh well. The reason i started this article in the first place was to see if there was any difference between a cheap PSU and a decent PSU, a point i think was proved. I think I was most surprised at the results of the Antec Earthwatts, I expected it to be at least equal or better than the FSP, and as you can see, all of the results were about 5 watts higher. The Silverstone got decent results for being as cheap as it is only about 49 dollars, im my experience Silverstone PSUs do get a bit loud when they are run hard, I notice this with my E2160 after its been running rosetta for about 20 minutes or so it starts hum a bit, its nearly silent when you first power it on. Considering it has a 120mm fan the noise is surprising. The Orion, forget it, the thing just feels cheap. The cables are tiny, its got ONE harddrive connector rail, the 6pin PCIE is just an addon cable, and the results are horrible, skip cheap PSUs. Not to mention its LOUD So as the winner of the competition the FSP gets to be the new PSU of my E2160. One thing i don’t like about the FSP though is the lack of shielding on the main power connector and the +4v add-on/PCI-E conn. This makes the cable look a bit messy. Other than that its a great PSU, I’ve only played with it for a short amount of time so I don’t know how its going to hold up over time, but its been running for 24 hours straight running Rosetta, so far, so good. |
