Unlocking the Phenom II X2 555: 3.2GHz Quad-Core for $99

Anandtech has an article about a Phenom II x2 into a Phenom II X4 talk about pulling one over on the man...

No I'm not talking about bypassing multiplier locks, the Black Edition takes care of that already. I'm talking about flipping a switch to enable the two disabled cores on the Phenom II X2 555. And you thought the Athlon II X4 635 was a bargain quad-core....

Experiment: Comparing Four Quad-Core Architectures At 2.8 GHz
Posted by goodspeed at 11:13 AM

Do you love your CPU cycles but wished you had more to go around? Are you in the market for one of the latest quad cores? Do you want to see how your current system stacks up to some others? If you answered yes to any of these questions then head on over to Tom's Hardware and check out their latest feature article comparing four different quad core architectures.
Here's a snippet: "The Issue with Variety

Ten years ago, it was really easy to stay up to date on the latest processor offerings and know what to buy. You had Intel's various product offerings at their different frequencies, and AMD's own counterparts. Today, the game is much more complex. Performance is no longer defined just by clock speed; core count and performance per clock are equally important. In addition, specifics such as cache capacities, as well as bus and memory speed, vary the parameters and hence complicate direct comparisons. Let’s not forget that it’s also important to take features such as virtualization technology and power efficiency into consideration. Intel, in particular, is guilty of selectively removing value-adds like VT-x from some models, while leaving it in others, without making the distinction clear."

Intel unveils 48 core futuristic chip
Posted by piratenews at 3:34 PM

Thanks to Sneaky for finding this...

BANGALORE: The world’s leading chipmaker, Intel Technologies, unveiled its futuristic chip on Wednesday which was developed with significant
contributions from its research and development (R&D) centre in Bangalore.

The concept chip, which has 48-cores called ‘single-chip cloud computer,’ has processing power 20 times higher than the ones currently being used. The chip developed over a period of two years saw a team of 40 people across three labs of Intel globally — Hillsboro, US, Braunschweig, Germany and Bangalore contributing equally to the project.

The Bangalore lab contributed in the areas of circuit and physical design, memory controller logic and the mesh interconnect network. According to Vasantha Erranguntla, senior engineering manager, Intel Labs India: “The single-chip cloud computer was designed as a concept vehicle for parallel software research”. For now, this concept chip would be largely used for academic and research purposes.

Intel’s 48 core chip is also an extension of its earlier research called the teraflop processor which had 80 cores, in which the Bangalore centre had a major part to play. .................................................. ...............

On the 48 core chip, Intel is expecting the processor to get into commercial production only in the next three to four years. This could be largely used in the area of data centres or conducting very large computing applications.

Though for now, Intel is looking to engage industry and academia next year by sharing 100 or more of these experimental chips for hands-on research in developing new software and programming models. Ms Erranguntla said they were also holding discussions with several research labs and universities in India also to be part of this concept chip.

Anandtech reviews the new AMD Radeon 5970

Heres a peak:
Let’s get straight to the point, shall we? Today AMD is launching the 5970, their dual-GPU card that finishes building out AMD’s technical domination of the high-end market. With it AMD delivers the absolute victory over NVIDIA’s GTX 295 that the Radeon 5870 couldn’t quite achieve and at the same time sets the new high water mark for single-card performance.

Avast, me hearties... September 19 is International "Talk Like a Pirate Day"
Posted by piratenews at 10:41 PM

ARRRRR... to all our Pirate friends around the world celebrating International "Talk Like a Pirate Day"...

Iffin ye want to join in the revelry, heres a bit to get you started...

Ahoy! - "Hello!"

Avast! - Stop and give attention. It can be used in a sense of surprise, "Whoa! Get a load of that!" which today makes it more of a "Check it out" or "No way!" or "Get off!"

Aye! - "Why yes, I agree most heartily with everything you just said or did."

Aye aye! - "I'll get right on that sir, as soon as my break is over."

Arrr! - This one is often confused with arrrgh, which is of course the sound you make when you sit on a belaying pin. "Arrr!" can mean, variously, "yes," "I agree," "I'm happy," "I'm enjoying this beer," "My team is going to win it all," "I saw that television show, it sucked!" and "That was a clever remark you or I just made." And those are just a few of the myriad possibilities of Arrr!

The Beatles remastered...
Posted by piratenews at 12:19 AM

The remastered Beatles catalog, on sale Wednesday, is the remasterpiece fans have been craving since 1987, when the band's albums lost dimension and purity in their only wholesale transfer to CD.

Results vary from subtle to dramatic... yet the enhancements overall are undeniable.

Even new and casual fans will be tempted to splurge on the $260 16-disc stereo box set (plus DVD) and the pricier $299 13-disc mono box set, which won't return to shelves once the initial pressing sells out.
