Due
to the MANY requests I have been getting in the FORUM
, (errr, ONE! :-) I have decided to share with you how to HARD MOD your
dUron/Tbird for the purpose of OVERCLOCKING. This is for all you peeps out there with one of these CPUs,
but WITHOUT any options with which to change the MULTIPLIER, be it in BIOS, or
with JUMPERS. Now I realize that
www.tomshardware.com has a VERY in depth article on EXACTLY what you need to
do. As a matter of fact, this is
where I gathered my information for this article. The ONE thing that I think his article is lacking is an
ACTUAL demonstration of said process, and THAT is what I intend to show you
here.
Many
articles on the internet have stated that you can CUT
the BRIDGES of your AMD CPU with a KNIFE or a RAZORBLADE. This is NOT the case! I have tried BOTH, and not even my
Chris Reeves knives can chisel through those bridges. Trust me, they ARE that tuff. It was AFTER many cut and profusely bleeding fingers that I
went in search of a better solution.
The following is what I came up with.
First, lets take a look at what I am talking about here. Here is a picture of the dUron, in all
it's glory, GOLDEN BRIDGES and all.

NOTE:
This is NOT my pic, I ripped it from another site, unfortunately, I
can't remember which in order to give them credit, but
in a moment you will se why. :-)
Now
you can see in the picture that there are L1 through L7 BRIDGES. In reading the article at Toms
Hardware, he tells you which BRIDGES need to be CUT, and which need to be
closed, depending on what frequency, or voltage you want your CPU to operate
at. I will not go in to that here,
as I see no need in repeating what has been said so many times on the internet. I
will however, reccomend that you read the article at Toms Hardware, in order to
better understand what I am talking about here. Now we know what the BRIDGES look like, and what we have to
do with them. Here is what I came
up with.

My
trusty dUron 600
Well,
now you understand why I had to use a RIPPED picture in order to show you the
BRIDGES. All I have is this CRAPPY
internet cam, so PLEASE bear with me. I REALLY hate it when I see other sites
RIPPING pictures and claiming them for their own. The ONLY reason I am including this picture, is to show you
that I do indeed compile my own work.
Now, back to the show.
The
first thing you are going to need is a HIGH SPEED rotary tool. Many people have had good luck with the
DREMEL brand of tools. I on the
other hand had to be different. (read : CHEAP:-) I picked up a Black&Decker WiZard
rechargeable rotary tool. It was
on sale at the local hardware store for $19.99. It even came with ALL the BITS I needed for this
article. Cool!

This is my WiZard. There
are many like it, but this one is mine.
That is a DIME in the picture for reference.
You
can see in the picture that I have the CUTTING WHEEL attachment already in
place. I have found that the
GRINDING wheels do not do a GREAT job at getting to the BRIDGES without making
a real mess of things. So we will
be using said CUTTING wheel.

Here is a CLOSEUP of
the CUTTING WHEEL. Same dime. Yeah, I'm cheap. I don't HAVE a quarter. :-)
"Now
that I have my dUron, and my WiZard HIGH SPEED rotary tool WITH cutting wheel
attachment in place, what the HELL do I do?" Well, you place your dUron on a FLAT soft surface, and hold
it tight with one hand. A mouse
pad works GREAT, as it keeps the PINS from bending. Pins, bending, BAD!
Turn on your tool in the OTHER hand, (heh, I said TURN ON, and TOOL in
the same sentence:-) and START GRINDING AWAY ALL THE GOLDEN
BRIDGES! Yup, you heard me right. No, I am NOT insane.
Actually you can leave L5 alone, but the REST must go.

Here is a picture of
a dUron "getting the treatment."

Same dUron, side view. Where the hell did my dime go?
Once
you have ALL the BRIDGES removed, you will notice that there are still little
tiny contacts left at the ends of where each BRIDGE used to be. For example, if a BRIDGE looked like
this ( | ) before you ground it away, it will now
look like this( : ). Neat, huh? Now all you have to do, is connect the DOTS with a #2
pencil, or better yet, a MECHANICAL pencil, just like it says in the article
at Toms Hardware. Go to the SCHOOL
SUPPLIES section at your local store and pick up some of those BIC plastic mechanical pencils. I did, and they work GREAT. You can select the multiplier, and
voltage to your hearts content.
For
those of you that are getting up there in years and just don't have the
eyesight you used to, or for those of you who just like to see your work CLOSE
UP, here is a neat little tool I happened across at the local SCIENCE store. It is a 30x hand held microscope, put
out by the SILVER BURDETT GINN corporation. It allows you to see
those TINY BRIDGES like you've never seen them before.

30x microscope. Theres my dime. :-)
As
far as reccomendations go, assuming you have a 600/650 dUron, I would start out
at 800mhz 1.7v. I have had GOOD
results with this setting and don't see wht you should have any problems with
it either. You can make
adjustments as you see fit.
Depending on the QUALITY of your particular CPU, and cooling methods,
you will get varying results. Now
this is NOT reccomended for those who have a weak heart, are medicated, or just
plain MAROONS! And don't think
that because you cut a HOLE right through your dUron due to the fact that you
were TOO STOOPID TO STOP WHEN IT COUGHT FIRE AND YOU COULDN"T SEE ANYMORE
BECAUSE OF THE SMOKE, that I, or anyone else HERE is going to replace your
haedware. WE EILL NOT!!! DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
If
however, you HAPPEN to MELT a dUron, or any other hardware for that matter,
feel free to line it up at 50 paces and BLAST the snot out of it! Just be sure to take pictures. -)

H&K P7M8 with
Magsafe AGENT loads. Now this
would do some NICE blasting!
. If you made it this far, you probably
only came because your buddy said there was a picture of an H&K, and you
had to SCROLL down here to get to it. :-) Either way I thank you for your patience. This has been Goodspeed, reporting to
you LIVE, from the deep, dark, depths of my own
personal cave.
PROS
*You CAN achieve 1100mhz from a dUron 600
without a $150.00 motherboard.
*Minimal cost.
*Your friends will be AMAZED at your new found talents.
CONS
*You can SERIOUSLY cut MANY fingers if you are
not CAREFUL! (missing
digits=BAD!)
*Yes, it IS possible to RUIN a perfectly good
$40.00 CPU (Doode, it's like $40.00, who cares?!:-)
*Your friends will think you are INSANE for
grinding away at your new CPU.
P.S.
I think it is best if you do this IN FRONT of your friends. Think of it this way. If you succeed, you are a HERO and they
want you to do all of their CPUs. Definate money making plan there. :-) If however,
you happen to FAIL MISERABLY, and start your dUron on fire while attempting
greatness, at least you have your friends there to see it And if you happen to CHOP off
some DIGITS in the process, and drive a STICK SHIFT, someone ELSE can drive you
to the hospital. Either way, take
pictures because we want to see them!
